Spanish in New York

New York callers, the setting, and the opening line.

  • Spanish is there from launch, at no extra cost: the one plan covers every answered call, in English and — if you switch it on — Spanish, 24 hours a day.
  • More than one in seven New Yorkers aged five and over speak Spanish at home (US Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2024 one-year estimates, table S1601).
  • New York is a one-party-consent state for recording calls (New York Penal Law §§ 250.00 and 250.05). Callers to a New York firm are not all calling from New York, so the opening is written for all-party-consent recording states. Every call opens with the same fixed disclosure, sent as the agent’s opening line: the caller is speaking with an AI assistant and not an attorney, the call is recorded and transcribed, staying on the line is consent, and anyone who would rather not be recorded can hang up (the exact words).
  • With Spanish on, one more sentence follows the fixed recording and AI disclosure, offering to continue in Spanish. A caller who takes that offer then hears the same disclosure again, in full, in Spanish.
  • New York regulates how lawyers advertise and seek out clients. Intake Gateway answers the calls made to your line; how New York’s rules bear on the way you use it is a question for you and your counsel.
  • You switch Spanish on yourself — it is off until you do, and the setting asks you to turn it on only if someone at your firm can follow up with a Spanish-speaking client.

How to turn on Spanish

Not a message-taker

A generic AI receptionist takes a message. This one runs your intake.

Urgent cases offered a live transfer

A fatality, anything involving a city or a public body, an adjuster pushing for a recorded statement, evidence about to disappear: the agent recognizes the signs and offers to put the caller through to you live, in the hours you allow transfers. When it is unsure, it offers the transfer.

A callback promised, or a consultation booked or requested

Every routine caller is told the office will call them back, and gives the time that suits them. Connect a calendar and the agent books an ordinary case's consultation instead, from your real availability, while the caller is still on the phone, or requests one where your calendar asks you to confirm.

You hear every call

The recording, the transcript, a summary and the structured intake for every call are in your dashboard. Download what you need for your file: the recording, transcript, summary and intake are removed on a fixed schedule measured from each call.

Pricing

One plan. Every answered call included.

One plan, $149 a month, every answered call included. Fair use is a guide of up to 100 answered calls a month for one firm’s own line, not a cap: nothing meters your calls or cuts them off at that number. If you are consistently and substantially above it, we may get in touch to agree terms that fit that volume, and if we cannot agree any, the Terms of Service let either side end the plan.

Questions

What New York firms ask about Spanish intake.

How many New Yorkers speak Spanish at home?

More than one in seven people in New York aged five and over (US Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2024 one-year estimates, table S1601). Many of them speak English too; the figure is everyone who speaks Spanish at home, not only those who would rather be helped in it.

Will the agent answer a New York caller’s legal questions?

No. New York bars practicing law without a license under Judiciary Law §§ 478 and 484, a misdemeanor under § 485. The agent never gives legal advice or predicts an outcome: that is a hard rule, not a setting. Asked a legal question, such as whether a caller has a case, it does not answer it, and says who will.

Is the recording disclosure repeated in Spanish?

Yes, for a caller who switches. With Spanish on, one Spanish sentence follows the English disclosure; a caller who takes it up gets the whole intake in Spanish, starting with the full recording disclosure in Spanish, because consent to words a caller didn’t follow isn’t really consent.

New York needs only one party’s consent. Why can’t I shorten the opening?

Because the disclosure is fixed: the same words for every firm and every state, and no firm can switch it off. Only your firm’s name in it and, with Spanish on, the Spanish offer change. Whether its wording meets your bar’s rules is for you to check.

Has the New York State Bar Association written about lawyers using AI?

Yes. The New York State Bar Association publishes guidance on lawyers’ use of generative AI; check its current version. We don’t read it for you: whether this product fits your duties under it is for you and your counsel.

And if Spanish stays off?

With Spanish off, a caller who can’t go on in English hears one sentence in Spanish saying this line can only help them in English and that the office will get their number, and the call ends. No intake is taken in a language they didn’t understand, and you still get the email with their number.
